Rural Carrier Associates (RCAs) must be available to work on an as-needed basis.



Driving Requirement


Applicants must have a valid state driver’s license, a safe driving record, and at least two years of unsupervised experience driving passenger cars or larger vehicles. The driving experience must have taken place in the U.S. or its territories or U.S. military installations worldwide.


A personal vehicle suitable for use is required for this position.

Employment Requirements


Postal Service employment is conditional upon meeting medical suitability, general eligibility, and background check requirements. Job offers are conditional until all requirements are met, even if work begins first.

Background Check


The Inspection Service conducts a criminal background check using U.S. information resources (e.g., FBI fingerprint check, state, and county checks). The background check includes a five-year inquiry for any U.S. locations where the individual has resided, worked, or gone to school. Individuals who have not resided in the U.S. for the last five years may not have complete background checks, making them ineligible for postal employment.



Functional Purpose


Rural Carrier Associates are responsible for casing, delivering, and collecting mail along a prescribed rural route using a vehicle. RCAs provide a variety of services to customers along their route.



Duties and Responsibilities



  • Sorts mail in delivery sequence for the assigned route.

  • Receives and signs for accountable mail.

  • Loads mail into the vehicle.

  • Delivers mail to customers along a prescribed route and collects receipts and monies for accountable mail.

  • Sells stamps, stamped paper, and money orders. Accepts C.O.D., registered, certified, and insured mail, and parcel post.

  • Furnishes routine postal information to customers and provides requested forms.

  • Returns collected and undeliverable mail, submits monies, and receipts to the post office.

  • Prepares mail for forwarding and maintains records of change of address.

  • Prepares a daily trip report and keeps a customer list.

  • Conducts special surveys as required.

  • Maintains an inventory of stamps and stamped paper.

  • Ensures mail security at all times.



Job Requirements



  • Ability to perform physical labor, including standing, walking, bending, and lifting heavy mail containers weighing up to 70 pounds.

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Available to work on Saturdays and on an as-needed basis.



Supervision


Reports to the Manager, Customer Services; Supervisor, Customer Services; or Postmaster.



Qualifications and Additional Provisions


Must maintain a professional appearance and demeanor when interacting with the public.


Must have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.


Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.


Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
